After 2 1/2 years of research, development and design, Chicago-based Moji is ushering in the dawn of a new “Ice Age” with the introduction of an innovative icing system. The company has developed Moji Knee – a two-piece compression ice wrap that makes the critical step of post-activity icing more practical and efficient than ever before.
Moji products apply 21st century technology and materials to simplify a procedure that has been literally stuck in the Ice Age. A host of published research supports icing (a.k.a. “cold compression therapy”) as one of the simplest, most effective, and critical measures toward post-workout recovery, injury prevention, and rehab. Despite the wealth of supporting facts and expertise, the majority of active consumers fail to commit to a consistent post-activity icing regimen.
Moji executives established the company with the vision of creating a superior solution that eliminated the barriers associated with common icing methods.
“Our design goals were to maximize the benefits of icing, while designing out all of the reasons why people avoid icing,” says Victor Viner, founder of Moji. “Through extensive research, we identified inconvenience, messiness and lack of mobility as the greatest barriers to icing; and we’ve eliminated all three with Moji Knee and will continue to do so with our ongoing line of Moji icing and recovery products.”
Moji breaks down these common barriers through its innovative two-piece construction. Moji’s patent-pending “Cold Cell” design provides optimal cooling characteristics, while its unique compression wrap provides maximum comfort and allows for complete mobility and range-of-motion while icing. In addition, Moji has developed “Moji To Go,” a portable cooling device that allows users to take their Moji products with them and ice whenever they choose, wherever they may be.
Unlike other icing products, Moji’s innovative Cold Cell design allows it to literally move with you – a composite of 18 individual cold cells. The individual cells work collectively, form-fitting to the specific shape and dimensions of the knee to accommodate variances in each individual’s range-of-motion, gait, and unique movement patterns. The Cold Cell features a multi-piece construction that begins with Moji’s proprietary cell gel formula.

Moji’s cell gel is engineered to remain pliable and offer optimal cooling over the duration of the icing process. The cell gel is encased in a unique film, engineered for a soft and supple feel, unlike most icing methods. For optimal comfort, Moji employs a high-tech Dri-lex® fabric layer that acts as a soft skin, encasing the Moji Cold Cell. While common methods typically provide a messy experience due to condensation and leaking, the highly absorbent Dri-lex® fabric eliminates condensation and leaking while maximizing comfort.
Equal attention was given to the development of Moji’s compression wrap. Generally, the plastic-pouch constructions of common icing methods are uncomfortable, cumbersome, and ill-fitting, confining the user to a sedentary state when icing.
The Moji wrap, however, ensures optimal comfort and complete mobility. Moji’s wrap design utilizes Polartec® four-way stretch fabric to provide a unique combination of compression that focuses cooling to targeted areas, range-of-motion, and mobility. To ensure maximum comfort, the wrap features four neoprene stretch tab fastening points that allow the user to customize the fit to his or her preference.
To maximize usage, Moji offers its Moji To Go – a stainless steel, thermally insulated canister that keeps the Moji Cold Cell at its “frozen state” for up to six hours. Moji To Go is designed to fit conveniently into any standard athletic bag or backpack and enables users to ice whenever or wherever it’s needed. Moji To Go eliminates the final barrier to icing, freeing the user from the confinement associated with conventional methods.
While developing a superior icing method has been its primary focus, Moji was founded to fulfill an even greater mission of keeping active people active through efficient recovery and injury prevention. In addition to the development of a full line of Moji icing products and solutions, the
Moji Web site serves as an advocacy and information source for effective recovery and a high-activity lifestyle. The Web site features an interactive library with editorial contributions from leading experts in training, recovery, and rehabilitation. In short, Moji has set out to create the preeminent community for anyone committed to maintaining an active lifestyle.
“While Moji has undoubtedly created the superior method for convenient and effective icing, Moji is much more than simply its products,” says Kathy Weber, MD, team physician for the Chicago Bulls and White Sox and a contributing expert to Moji. “Moji champions a mentality of vitality for people both young and old, intent on maximizing their lives through physical activity and effective recovery.”
Moji Knee is only the beginning of Moji’s vision to become the leading consumer resource on recovery and injury prevention. The company plans to introduce a full line of products, featuring the same two-piece design and optimal cooling characteristics as Moji Knee. Plans include the introduction of Moji Back this summer, as well as Moji Shoulder during the fourth quarter of 2009. Moji has further plans underway for additional icing products for other physical areas commonly affected by exercise and activity.
