Favorite Song?

What is your favorite song? Has it been your favorite song for a long time or does your favorite song change through time? Music therapists have written about songs from their client/patients' perspective and many have eloquently described how their use of a patient's favorite song has enhanced their ability to address significant moments or personal themes, thus enhancing the therapeutic relationship. Let's think about songs we use for ourselves for a moment. Indeed, songs can capture the essence of a moment or the flavor of an experience. Songs in some ways represent a piece of our culture and may directly or indirectly reflect issues or themes of relevance to our society. There are many musical and lyrical components to consider when thinking about a favorite song from a purely artistic/aesthetic perspective. Let's delve into the past or perhaps consider the present moment for a minute. Tell me: What is your favorite song and what image or snapshot in time do you tie to this song?

My favorite song is a part of my original cultural background, which is Russian. So the song is called "Vinovata li ya" , which means "was it my fault?". The song is in 4/4, minor key, medium tempo. it tells a story of a girl who was in love with the wrong man, did not listen to her mom's warning, and was left by that man soon after the first date. Its like a story song - going from 'Mommy, let me go and see him" and ending "its all my fault, why did I let him even kiss me?". The song is pretty outdated, it was a "hit" many decades ago, was sung primarily in villages. Russian society did not tolerate "dating" for unmarried girls, making it prohibited behavior. Such girl could not get married well after. But this song is about "trusting the one you love" and "putting your life into his hands". I love it because it is "deeply Russian", and reminds me of the times when Russia was mostly agricultural country, with slow-paced life, no cars, just nature and people who knew how to love.

One of my favourite songs is a much appreciated hymn, by Lina Sandell, 1832-1903. She was the daughter of pastor in the Lutheran church. When Lina was 26, she witnessed her father´s tragic death, falling overboard a ship and drowning in front of her eyes. The trauma affected the young woman, who became one of Sweden´s most loved hymn writers. Charactarized by devout simplicity and deep trust in the Lord, her hymns are still popular. One of her 650 hymns is Blott en dag, Day by Day, is often sung towards the end of life.
Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find, to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.
Thanks to our universal boundary-less internet, you can all hear a version of the music on YouTube Blott en Dag" ("Just One Day") by Oscar Ahnfelt.

Hard question to answer. I even listed a bunch of songs that I've loved for years trying to find it. They just didn't seem to answer the call of favorite though.
My favorite song presently is "Touched By The Sun" as written and sung by Carly Simon. It's track 18? on the Reflections/Greatest Hits album. The first time I heard it I was floored and it calls to me like no other right now. It motivates, inspires and puts me in a great mood after I've listened to it a couple of times.
Just looked up the song and found that Carly wrote, "Like A River" for her mother and "Touched By The Sun" for Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who were close friends that died within 4 months of each other during the writing of the album.

Whenever I hear the song "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkle, not only do I think of the holidays of the late 60's buy I always recall the scent of Christmas trees very strongly. Even though this is not one of my favorite songs, the images it evokes are quite strong. I'm not sure I actually have a favorite song but there are ones that evoke memories.

I have quite a few favorite songs, but the one that came immediately to mind is "Someone to Watch Over Me". This was my father's favorite song, so the image I get is of my father playing the ukulele and singing it. It makes me feel warm and connected. I was thining about my father's connection to this song a few years ago (he had already been dead for 30 years) and it struck me that my father grew up in an orphanage, and probably longed for someone to watch over him. Problably if I asked him why this was his favorite song he would say, "It has great lyrics, inventive rhymes, and a really good melody".

Great question...My favorite song is I Stop The World and Melt With You by Modern English. It takes me right back to my dating years when I fell madly in love with my husband (and still am). Every time I hear the song I transform into a 25 year old who doesn't have a care in the world.....great feeling if only for a few minutes!

Unchained Melody, The Righteous Brothers. All you have to do is listen to it to know why.

Zorba the Greek by Herb Alpert and the Tijuanna Brass. It reminds me of playing in the basement when I was a kid with my best friend, Joanne.

Otis Redding's untimely death ended the beginning of a new music genre 'zen blues'. The only realized example is my favorite song " Sitting on the Dock of the Bay"

The song that comes to mind is "Where is Love?" from the movie Oliver. In 1971, when I was turning 9 years old, my father took me clear across Toronto on the subway to see the movie for my birthday. As I was one of four children, each a year apart, the only other time I recall having him all to myself was when he drove me to cello lessons when I was a teenager. I was mesmerized by the movie and by the boy Oliver, who appeared to be 9 also. I learned every song by heart. When my three children were born beginning in 1999, I sang to them every night. And this is one of the songs I sang them. Last summer, my 3 year old began spontaneously singing this same song to my mother when we were visiting my sister. Somehow, that felt like something had come full circle in my life.

I have many favorite songs. Music definitely creates emotional response, so it depends on my mood. I love The Train song by Victoria Williams, The Milky Way by The Church, and Dacing Queen by Abba. Each one has it's own way of bringing me to a happy place! I'm happy just thinking about them, now I need to go listen - thanks Joanne! :)

So many songs bring me to great places so I narrowed it down by thinking who would I like to see in concert and being a Jersey girl, that would be Bruce Springstein. Fave song Rosalitta!! When I go with my sister and Jersey shore friends to see him in concert it's like we stepped into a time machine. Makes me want to jump up and dance like a teenager!!! ahhhh....glory days!

I love Broadway tunes. When I hear a song--or even better, attend a show!--I end up humming the tunes for weeks afterward. I especially love the slow songs from Camelot, Phantom of the Opera, Man of la Mancha, Cats, My Fair Lady, Les Miz, Funny Girl...

"Brown-Eyed Girl." It's one of the greatest rock songs of all times. Great hook. Nostalgic, joyful lyrics. Thank you Van Morrison. (And I've got brown eyes to boot -- what's not to like?)

Wow - every time someone asks me what my favorite song is, I'm stumped. There are favorites in categories, such as my favorite hymn (In the Garden) and favorites from my childhood (That's the way, uh huh, uh huh I like it, Uh huh Uh huh . . .) I even have a favorite oldie dance tune (Double Dutch Bus!) I have a favorite song for sad moods(All Blue), happy moods,(too many to list) and the I'm not sure-what-kind-of-mood-I'm-in-mood. I guess I feel disloyal naming a "best of show" favorite, or perhaps it's just in my nature to be undecisive. Either way, it is a good question.

I have so many favorite songs-I have to say that my most favorite is "You've Got a Friend"--when James Taylor sings that song, I feel warmth, comfort, and as though the world is right. This song will always be a classic-Thank you Carole King!

I too have a number of favorite songs: Crocodile Rock by Elton John reminds me of my carefree days as a late teenager; anything by Bruce Springsteen makes me recall all my summers spent at an aunt's house and all the summers we rented in Belmar at the Jersey shore. Being a very cultural person there is a beautiful Irish song, actually a lament, called Only Our Rivers Run Free which depicts the hopes and dreams of a peaceful Ireland but could apply to anywhere there is strife and unrest. Two other Irish songs: The Homes of Donegal and The Hills of Kerry are always reminders of my parents and where they are from in Ireland. But there is one song which I sang to my belly all through my miracle pregnancy, as a lullaby to my son as a baby and still once in a while (when I am allowed LOL) which is a duet by Tim McGraw & Faith Hill - It's Your Love. (It's your love, you know it does something to me; Sends a spark right through me, I can't get enough. And if you wonder, about this spell I'm under; oohhh, it's your love!). Love and peace.

"Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. Every time I hear it I want to get up and dance.
"I'll never fall in love again" is one of the first songs that I tried to memorize.

Favorite song is "Are the stars out tonight." It was my wedding song.

I have been asking myself this same question for years and always come up with the same answer, I can't.... music is such a part of my life (like breathing, eating sleeping and drinking). When I was in college, I studied in the Pub (the library was too quiet). I can't even come up with a Top 10 but for this blog I will share a few: Always sung by Patsy Cline, Desperado by the Eagles , For my Lady by the Moody Blues, The Pretender by Jackon Browne and True Companion by Marc Cohn.

my favorite song shifts with what I am living through in the moment. A memory can trigger one song to become more important than another. Right now, I am not listening to songs but instrumental music. But I have many many songs that I love- some I love to listen to, some I love to sing
Imagination is one that comes to mind right now

It's hard to pinpoint my favorite song, since I like music of many different styles. "Piano Man" by Billy Joel is still one of my all-time favorites because of its vividness. You really can get a sense of that smoky room, the desparate people in the crowd, and the talented young piano player wasting his time in that two-bit bar. I also like theater music, and among those songs, "Move On" from "Sunday in the Park With George" is a favorite. Stephen Sondheim has such a talent for capturing human emotion in song and placing it perfectly within a script. More recently, the son "Electricity" from the new Elton John musical, "Billy Elliot" is a favorite. Its a beautiful song, in which Billy describes the magic he feels when he is dancing. And it doesn't hurt that it's written by Elton, another of my all-time favorites.

I have my own "signature" song in Chinese. It is a pop song. I have got this song for over 20 years. I can say that the song sticks to my heart so hard since I find its lyrics really represent my belife in life.
However, at the same time, I have many "favourite" songs which come to my life according to the moments the songs touch me. These songs remind me some memories, helping me to express some feelings or thoughts without words, but with music/lyrics.
Overall, favourite songs to me are not just with good musical arrangement, but also with good lyrics.

My favorite long time song is My Ship Has Sails by Kurt Weill. Infact I like anything he had written after he movev to the U.S. in the 1930s. He wrote September Song another one of my favorites. He also wrote The Threepenny Opera. For me, his mustc is romantic sentimental and eerie at the same time and bring up vivid pictures of what he writes about.

I do not have one favorite song.... but that shifts. One day it will be "While My guitar gently weeps" and the next the opening movement in a Beethoven violin sonata, then the next Andean flute music.

That is the beauty of song.......

It has been wonderful to see so many snipets of songs and to read about your snapshots of experiences. Many of you have e mailed and asked me to disclose what my favorite song is. Truthfully, I have a many. For every chapter of my life, and for so many moments and some are connected directly to people and places. When I was young, Ventnor was "So Happy Together" (Turtles) and Rochester was "Going Places" (see Jill's comments). As I reached the teen years it was Bohemian Rhapsody (Troy), Rainy Days and Mondays (my sister's bedroom) and This One's for You and for Camp (Seneca Lake) it was "Save the Country" and "Get Together" ("Love is but a song we sing..." thanks to Ellen Jaffe). Then I immersed myself in jazz (college and NYC). Lover Man and God Bless the Child are the winners in that idiom. If I think of family it is definately "I Know a Little Pig," and "Summertime." And "The Fantasticks" which I just saw again for the 100th time. I also love the song "What's the Use of Wondering" from Carousel. I have not even touched upon arias and symphonies. That would require another blog. My fav songs to play in the folk idiom are "Here's to You Rounders" and "Company" (Dean Friedman). I will stop now. These are but a few of the many melodies and lyrics that have have held me through times of importance thus far. I am grateful for the many shared moments of song that I have had in playing, listening and singing amongst so many wonderful people througout my life. I look forward to more...

Favorite song...too complex to answer! My favorites shift through time, adding to a long list. I definitely have songs that I love for no other reason than I loved it when I was younger...songs I heard on the radio as a child and memorized, or songs I sang with my friends during recess such as Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" and "We are the Champions, or "Another Brick in the Wall". College brought fun dance music, such as "Everybody Dance Now" or "Back to Life" and returns to the classics such as "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Crash".

I love artists that I was introduced to in college (Tori Amos, "Sleeps with Butterflies" is a new fav). And now, some favorite songs I have are those I now sing for my 2 year-old daughter. A favorite song that I sing to her, "What a Wonderful World", is a favorite because of the beautiful melody, lyrics, but even more so because she sings it with me. When I am much older, I know that I'll think back to this time and the beauty of hearing her little voice singing out into the darkness just before we say goodnight.

Gotta be the Paul Brady song " The Island" a sad and yet uplifting song about the futility of violence and killing in Ireland over so many years.

Paul who? Paul Brady is one of the most under-rated artists of our time. Bob Dylan named his as one of his favorite songwriters.

Just search on Google and you will find The Island and much more including video clips on You Tube.

There are many different kinds of songs that i love but i have to say that the most recent one i have come to love is called "Our Song" by Taylor swift.

Okay, this definitely changes with my mood, moment in life, company, context... Right now I've connected with a song by Natasha Bedingfield, "Unwritten". I love the idea of writing one's life as we go, the creative freedom and capacity to impact my life in this way. Its living the dream for me. I also love the sense of embracing the world that I feel with this song, "live your life with arms wide open", and the way it moves beyond an idea to a physical experience, "feel the rain on your skin" and "let the sun illuminate the words that, you could not find." Thanks for spirring the dialogue Joanne.

Hi Joanne,

What a great question!

At the moment my favorite song is "If You Want to Sing Out - by the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens.

I'm confident that you and your readers will enjoy and find the Awareness Test on my Blog instructive... It's amazing to discover what a person can see or not see, hear or not hear or feel or not feel depending on where that person focuses their attention.
