Hypnosis Can Help Relieve Phantom Pain
Hypnosis Can Help Relieve Phantom Pain The Pain That Wasn't There Here is what happened with one reluctant individual, Henry, whose wife brought him into the office. Henry was an amputee who lost his left leg below the knee to diabetes. It had been seven months since his operation, but he was experiencing severe cramps in his missing left foot. He had been assured that there was nothing wrong with his operation. He had an artificial leg that he was learning to use and was surprisingly comfortable with it very quickly. Yet, he had these cramps and no foot to massage in order to relieve them. There was no place in the office for Henry to lie down so he was helped into a relaxed state and guided through imagery designed to change his sensory experience into a cognitive experience while sitting in his wheelchair. His remarks afterward are typical. "I didn't think this would work. I went along with your instructions just to get out of here. In the beginning, I felt foolish. But then the most amazing thing happened. I didn't realize it happened until after you finished. I was picturing the color change and enjoying the look of it. I was so engrossed I forgot about my foot. When we were done, I went back to my foot, expecting to find the pain again. It was completely gone."

Guiding your patient through the Detox is your inducition -- After guiding your patient through the detox have him close his eyes -- as he opens both of his fists--
Now tell him you want him to decide which imagery works best for him and guide him through both of these:

Think of this as a recipe and consider yourself a chef -
I just learned a 10 to 15 minute self-hypnosis technique that has helped people reduce or eliminate phantom pain -- would you like me to guide you through it-
First we want to release any and all of the toxic emotions and feelings that are associated with the discomfort - Ready -
Close and open your eyes... Inhale and exhale deeply... Now create a safe space in your mind and allow yourself to FEEL anything and every thing the comes up when you allow yourself to feel the pain and as you do make a fist with your right hand, release the fist.
2. Inhale, and exhale deeply and close and open your eyes.
3. Now understand that I am taking a light hearted approach - because that is the best way to help you - picture yourself in your mind as follows: Your eyes are sparkling with happiness, and there is a big smile on your face - because the "its" gone --You can feel that your heart is happy, your mind is peaceful and your spirit is playful. Excellent—now enjoy those feelings as you make a fist with your left hand and release it.
4. Now inhale and exhale deeply and gently close and open and close your eyes. Okay, now count to ten and at the count of ten; make a fist with both hands at the same time. Now just relax and mentally count to five before opening your fists...
Feeling better? Now try to get in touch with the unwanted emotions and feelings.... Amazing huh?
Now let's see which imagery works best for you -

It really can be that easy -
1. Wrap your stump in a warm, soft fabric, such as a towel. The warmth will sometimes increase circulation. Poor circulation is thought to be one cause of phantom pain.
2. Mentally exercise the limb that is not there in the area that is painful.
3. Mentally relax the missing limb and your stump.
4. Do some mild overall exercise to increase circulation.
5. Exercise the stump.
6. Tighten the muscles in the stump, then release them slowly.
7. Put ace wrap or shrinker sock on. If you have your prosthesis, put it on and take a short walk.
8. If you have pain with the prosthesis on, take it and the prosthetic sock off and put it back on after a few minutes. Sometimes the stump is being pinched and changing the way it is on will relieve the pressure on that nerve.
9. Change positions. If you are sitting, move around in your chair, or stand up to let the blood get down into your stump.
10. Soak in a warm bath or use a shower message or whirlpool on your stump. A hot tub is reported to do wonders.
11. Massage your stump with your hands or better yet have someone else message it while you try to relax your entire body.
12. Keep a diary of when pain is most severe. This can help you and your doctor identify recurring causes.
13. Wrap stump in a heating pad.
