Are you using the Power?

Today's Blog is a must read for therapists and health care professionals of all persuasions.

Fasten your seat belt -- A recently published study demonstrated that the "benefit" of performance enhancing drugs is all in the mind! It's really true! The placebo out-performed the hormones. And when you factor in the earlier study by Dr David Marchant visualization can actually boost muscle strength and help in their recovery.

I know, I know, the implications are mind-blowing - especially if you are in the healing arts. It's just another reminder for therapists, nurses, and other health care providers: Using the power of your patient's minds is medicinal and easy to do and evidence based.

Interesting stuff, Mike! A colleague of mine just came back from a seminar in Vermont, and brought back a lot of ideas from a hypnotherapist, Paul Volpe, who works with athletes who are allergic to pain medication. Some of the techniques show some real promise to my field, since my practice works with quite a few athletes.

Do you have a website I could refer clients to who are interested?

Seriously fascinating. I only wish a placebo could help my golf game.

Hi Amanda-

Self-hypnosis, also called guided imagery can actually improve your golf game and it is very easy to do.

Think of it as a Power Day-dream and model the grip, stroke and movements of a perfect drive, putt, and hole in one. Mentally rehearsing every thing that you want to happen exactly the way you want it to happen will improve your game.

I highly recommend renting the Will Smith movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance" -- They use imagery to win the big golf match in the movie...

Hi Michael,

This is interesting. I've heard of this before.

There's probably so much more to learn about the mind.

Thanks for posting.

We have a local hypnosis center that does offer a program to help ones golf game. I have always wondered if it would work. I also wonder if there are any hypnosis places nationally that help with dealing with post tramatic stress.
