BCDA

So I was elected to be treasurer of the Broward County Dietetics Association. I am really excited about being involved. I can make a difference. Tonight we had our first meeting and we were discussing dates for our meetings and coming up with ideas for speakers. We are trying to get young people involved so the association doesn't fall apart. It's great to sit around with seasoned dietitians to see how they got to where they are and how. It was very inspiring. I am very excited about the future.

Diet Pill- Alli

My co-workers niece works in the shoe department at Nordstroms which is a large department store. Last week something strange happened. When it was her turn to check on the restrooms, she noticed that there was a lot of poop on the floor. She had never seen anything like it! It wasn't baby poop either. She started thinking, what could it be?? And then it hit her. She is studying to be a dietitian and she knew the drug Alli had been approved and placed in stores all over. She figured it probably had to do with this new drug as this looked like the side effect of this new drug.

If you haven't heard of Alli, it is a new over-the-counter, FDA approved, weight loss pill. The pill works by preventing your body from absorbing some of the fat you eat. You are supposed to follow a low fat diet to prevent side effects from happening which include:

gas with oily spotting

loose stools

more frequent stools that may be hard to control

Alli can be great, but, it doesn't mean that you can eat all the fast food, ice cream and cake you want. Diet and exercise is still important, otherwise, you might be one of these women not being able to control your bowels while shopping.

New Business

WOW, Its been a long time since I have written, but my life has been so crazy. I work full time at the hospital, culinary school at night and trying to get my own business going. I am exhausted. I have made a connection with a Chiropractors office who wants to have an RD available. Great, I have an office to work out of but no clients so far. Any one have any ideas how I am promote myself?? I tried to look up local health fairs but I couldnt find any. Anyone have any cheap ideas to advertise?? I would appreciate any help :)

Back to school

I have been a registered dietitian for three years and out of college for four years. I decided this year to go back to school to further my education in the culinary arts, which I figured would be all play and no work. How hard could cooking be? Well I was very wrong. The first day they gave us a bunch of books to read, homework to do and DVDs to watch. After a few days of classes I have realized that I have matured and grown up a lot at the ripe old age of 27.

I am in a class with bunch of 18 year olds. It's funny to see where their priorities are. Their biggest concern is where the big party will be this weekend. I remember when that was important. Now you worry about bills, bills and more bills. Parties?? What is that?

I am really enjoying the classes and learning a whole bunch. My goal to take all these un-healthy meals I am learning to cook and make them healthier. Chef, is always yelling at me "stacy more butter" "stacy not enough salt" He gave me seven huge tubs of butter and told me to melt them. I asked him if we are going to use all of them today? He said yes. I told him this is a dietitian's worse nightmare. He rolled his eyes at me and laughed.

If anyone has any unhealthy recipes and wants me to healthy them up please email me at Stacy@stacyrobertsrd.com

In what type of setting do you practice?
I am currently working full-time in a hospital and part-time at a nursing home/rehabilitation center.

How and why did you get into your particular field?
Even as a youngster, I thought I could lose weight fast on the fad pasta diet! I eliminated fruits and vegetables from my diet, and ate protein only once in a while. Needless to say, my body was wrecked....my hair was thinning, I started getting pains after eating, I had less and less energy... most important of all, I started losing interest in things that I loved. After running to all kinds of doctors, I was lucky enough to see a holistic doctor who asked me the key question: What do you eat on a typical day? That was it! After she heard what I was eating, she shook her head... She concluded that I was basically malnourished... not that I was underweight, or skin and bones, but I was not eating right. As a result, it was determined that I had too much yeast growing my in gastrointestinal tract and that was causing my pain. This clicked with me. I never realized that what you put (or didn't put) into your body affected the way you would feel and look. I found my calling!

What are your greatest professional accomplishments thus far?
I've guided so many people toward a happier, healthier lifestyle. I've been instrumental in the formulation of nutritional plans for many different types of people, with many different needs. It is gratifying to see someone weak and unhealthy suddenly "brighten up," regain their vitality and go onward toward a better life.

What are your professional goals for the future?
I want to be able to share my knowledge by traveling to other locales, giving seminars about the importance of good nutrition to the kids, teens, parents and grandparents. I want to show these people the truth about nutrition, warning them not to believe everything that they read without investigating the benefits they claim. With my culinary background, I would love to teach people how to cook delicious and healthy meals, either one-on-one or in group settings. As TV and Radio are truly the world's biggest classrooms, sharing my ideas with media exposure is my primary goal.
