It continues to amaze me how many viruses, many of them causing respiratory complication and therefore stepping right into my department, could be prevented by following literally one simple rule: when you're sick, stop touching the holes in your face!

The ears, mouth, nose, and eyes are reservoirs of possible infections after even minor cross-transfer. I work with a sizeable number of hypercondriac asthmatics, many of them well-insured and practically already living in a bubble in the suburbs, and yes I affectionitely call them my "Bubble Boys and Girls". And despite their best efforts at sealing themselves in their homes, they still manage to pick up "new" diseases.

Everyone just bear in mind, that this is a variant of the flu, not a variant of Bubonic plague! It shares many of the same flu symptoms that people have been battling for the better part of a century. We've got the tactics and the tools to beat it. Stay hydrated and eat healthy and every once in a while, get some fresh air!

I agree that the media has blown the swine flu WAY out of proportion. Yearly on average, 36K people die from the "regular" flu. With that said, I still have patients concerned about it because of the media.

Has anyone been in contact with a patient with flu like symptoms?

I work in the pediatric unit in a Cleveland hospital and I just got back from a major scare we had from a daycare service where seven children all had flu-like symptoms. One child demonstrated symptoms earlier on Thursday and just like dominoes, kids were getting sick throughout the weekend. Three of the children displayed vomiting and diarrhea symptoms, which really set off the panic button.

Luckily the parents were all made aware through some sort of phone chain and since there were over 200 children assigned to the daycare service this week, the hospital made a point to notify and set aside special arrangements for them. I've only been certified for a year now and I've never seen anything quite like it... something out of an Outbreak movie!

As it turned out, after some testing, the children only had a strain of the standard flu virus and apparently some others had experienced dysentery that spread through some of the other children. You can imagine the horror of the parents though: face masks, oxygen tanks, and everything in bubble wrap? Either way, crisis averted :)

By now, most of my patients are sick of hearing information on the swine flu. It seems like they are trying to get Tamiflu to everyone. Just saw an article advising pregnant women and thier need for Tamiflu. It's also funny to so see a headline "The Swine Flu outbreak has reached to....21 people!". More people die from Asprin a day! Well, my advice is to get some Elderberry if you get the flu, swine or no swine variety. It will block the virus from attaching to your cells.
