CSM 2009
APTA's Combined Sections Meeting Heads to Las Vegas
01.15.09

Article available online at: http://www.therapytimes.com/011209CMSPreview

The Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) is a unique conference that focuses on programming designed by all 18 of APTA's specialty sections. This interesting event brings together more than 7,000 physical therapy professionals from across the nation for 5 days of cutting-edge programming, and networking opportunities, set against a backdrop of an exhibit hall filled with products and services to keep you current.

Attendees should please be aware when planning their trip that CSM 2009 unfolds from Monday to Thursday, February 9-12, rather than over an extended weekend, a change in format for CSM 2009 only.

Taking place at the famed Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, CSM 2009 will host over 350 companies displaying the latest services and products offered to the physical therapy profession. Grab a bite while you stroll through the Exhibit Hall to research new products or services to make your practice more efficient as well as discover the newest and most innovative products and services to help you help your patients. Don’t forget to visit the Career Center, Cyber Café, and APTA Resource Center – all truly making the Exhibit Hall your one stop shop!

Programmed for Success

CSM 2009 attendees can look forward to a number of thought-provoking sessions, including courses discussing professionalism across therapeutic disciplines; legal, ethical and reimbursement issues in various practice settings and patient age groups; and numerous topics covering neurology, orthopedics, integumentary, cardiopulmonary, vestibular and endocrine systems.

Among the most awaited sessions are:
  • The Continuum of Care for People With Lifelong Disabilities:A lecture series highlighting the issues and determining new frontiers for physical therapists working in the field, which will be held on Tuesday, February 10 from 8:00 am – 10:00 am in South Pacific E.
  • Pauline Cerasoli Lecture: The lecture “Physical Therapy: A Profession of Purpose, Promise, Potential, and Power ” will be held Wednesday, February 11 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, reflecting on where the physical therapy profession has been with far-reaching implications about where the field is still evolving and expanding.
  • Eugene Michels Researchers’ Forum 2009: Among other central topics, Maureen J. Simmonds, PT, PhD, and Michael John L. Sullivan, PhD will discuss the challenges of understanding, measuring and managing pain and its impact. This will be held on Thursday, February 12 from 5:00 pm–6:45 pm in Islander F.
  • Physical Therapy Political Action Committee (PT-PAC) Special Event: Attendees are invited to join their colleagues at PT-PAC’s event at Eyecandy Sound Lounge located in the center of Mandalay Bay’s casino floor. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Supporting physical therapy representatives in Congress by supporting PT-PAC, attendees contribute to their profession’s political voice on Capitol Hill. This event is co- sponsored by the Health Policy and Administration Section.

What’s Happening in Vegas

While the casino and shows are well worth the trip, its not all Vegas has to offer. Peruse through the list to see the lesser-known qualities of the ol’ Sin City.

Gallery of Fine Art at the Bellagio: Located in the heart of the Bellagio you'll find the Gallery of Fine Art. Stop by and visit the current exhibits to see the artworks that have come from museums as well as private collections.

Eiffel Tower Replica: The view from this vantage point is amazing, and you can even take the time to visit the restaurant in the tower, if you are interested in having a little dinner as well.

Las Vegas Space Flights: The zero gravity Las Vegas experience is now available for those who wish to feel weightless. A specially designed Boeing 727 will perform effects of a real space flight including flying smaller parabolas that recreate lunar gravity.

Liberace Museum: This museum has a $6.50 entrance fee, but allows visitors to see everything possible dealing with the pianist, and spend a lot of time marveling at the wonders this Museum has to offer.

Las Vegas Sky Diving: If the thrill of the blackjack table isn't your bag, or the dealer at the casino is taking too much of your money, strap on the parachute for some Las Vegas sky diving! Enjoy a picturesque view of Sin City and its beautiful surroundings while freefalling from 10,000 feet in the air.

Imperial Palace Auto Collections: Home to one of the world's largest and finest collection of antique, classic, muscle and special-interest cars, the Auto Collections at the Imperial Palace is a car enthusiast's dream. Cars are available to look at and, if your pockets are deep enough, to purchase as well.

Whether drawn to the locale, the conference offerings, or just looking to stay abreast of the latest and greatest in the industry, CSM 2009 offers an excellent opportunity for therapists and incoming students to remain at the cutting edge of the field.
