Cherries Pit Joint Pain
08.25.05

Article available online at: http://www.therapytimes.com/0825PTNEWSCHERRIES

What’s tiny in size, red in color and packs a healthy punch against joint pain?

Drum roll please! Can you believe the simple answer is tart cherries? Medical research has shown that tart cherries contain high concentrations of potent antioxidants that have been shown to potentially alleviate joint pain caused from gout, arthritis and inflammation.

According to researchers at Michigan State University, tart cherries contain anthocyanins and bioflavonoids, which inhibit the enzymes Cyclooxygenase-1 and -2, and prevent inflammation in the body. Further investigations revealed that daily consumption of tart cherries has the potential to reduce the pain associated with inflammation, arthritis and gout. The natural compounds in tart cherries have similar activity as aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen. Tart cherries may be 10 times stronger than aspirin or ibuprofen in relieving arthritic pain, according to medical research.

Is the whole cherry more valuable than the sum if its parts?

The answer is yes. Russel Reiter, MD, a neuronendocrinologist with the University of Texas Health Science Center, believes that the pain relief may not come from a specific antioxidant in the cherries, but from the synergistic effect of all the natural compounds in cherries. So with the increasing popularity of tart cherries, what should consumers look for in selecting tart cherry products? For best results, the Cherry Marketing Institute, a non-profit organization, recommends that you check the product label to make sure that it contains significant quantities of Montmorency tart cherries.

One product that is made from tart cherries and delivers significant amounts of Montmorency tart cherry is Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry dietary supplement. Each daily serving of Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry delivers 850 mg of 100 percent Montmorency tart cherry – the highest amount of pure tart cherry available on the market today.

The Benefit of Fruit – The Advantage of Science

Although more research is needed to unlock all of the amazing natural benefits of tart cherries, Eric Tesler is an example of the positive effects Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry dietary supplement can have on minor joint pain. "After fifteen years playing sports, my knees had enough. After a friend recommended Fruit Advantage, I am now able to play sports again. Within three weeks of taking the supplements I am back on the court, what a difference," says Tesler.
